About Mamma Mia!
Set on a colorful Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of great ABBA songs which are used in remarkably appropriate ways. A young woman about to be married discovers that any one of three men could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna, who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her backup singers, Rosie and Tanya.
Among the songs, written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus are such familiar '70s staples as 'Dancing Queen', "Super Trouper", "Thank you for the Music", "Money, Money, Money", 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', 'S.O.S.', 'Take a Chance on Me', "I Have a Dream" and 'The Winner Takes It All.' Although the title of the musical is taken from the group's 1975 chart-topper Mamma Mia, the plot is fictional, not biographical.
It is an example of a jukebox musical, and is notable for popularising the genre. The plot is adapted from the 1968 film Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell starring Gina Lollobrigida.
It had been seen by over ten million people worldwide as of July 2003. Estimates of 2007, is that 30 million have now seen Mamma Mia!.
